Hunter
Profession: Mercenary, hunter
Age: 25
Race: dolphin wyrd
Originates from: small fishing village, location unknown
History: Hunter was born to normal parents in a remote village when
Derim was rising. The ill-omened blood-light was quickly attached to a
hurricane that roared through soon after, killing fifteen fishermen that
hadn't gotten in quickly enough. While this managed to take the attention off
the bizarrely shaped boy, the stigma continually shadowed him.
Despite this, he soon became a main provider, his dolphin-ish
form perfect for the fishing lifestyle preferred by the humans around him.
While his (entirely human) neighbors feared him, they gradually came to accept
the fact that since he improved their lifestyle (or at least the meals), he
couldn't be that bad.
When Hunter turned 12, his life turned over. His mother
declared she was pregnant, and soon after, his father died in a fishing
accident. To top it all off, his brother was also born a wyrd - but a hamster
wyrd. At first he resented the attention Tanix got - after all, where did
these people get off, treating little brother as the crown prince and him as a
freak? - but when he realized the girl attraction in caring for Tanix, he got
over his jealousy.
Meanwhile, he soon came to hate the routine of fishing,
schooling, and more fishing, and his mother's efforts to teach him her trade
of carving were not appreciated. To escape, Hunter began wandering the
forested hills nearby. One day, while searching for rabbits, deer, or some
other sort of animal to take back as meat, he stumbled into a dire wolf that
had taken on the wrong animal and was badly wounded. While it was going to die
soon anyway, Hunter took advantage of the situation and charged in. He ended
up slightly mauled, but the victor. The villagers were shocked when he came
back with a dire wolf and scars to prove he had fought it, but they soon
accepted his new role. Life continued on about as normal as it could get,
until Tanix turned seven, when he began to tell of having strange dreams, many
of which came true. Hunter managed to keep a lid on things, but privately
began to worry about the 'voices' that talked to his brother in his sleep.
Life was finally disrupted by a mysterious plague that
swept through the village, killing about a third of the population, including
Hunter's mother. Needing a scapegoat, the remaining villagers tried to lynch
Hunter and his brother. They managed to escape, thanks to an invisibility
spell Tanix had learned in his dreams.
Recently, the brothers have joined Vixette in her quest to
find Uth Teleros. Hunter's quietly finding his place among the band, but has
yet to meet the Seekers. While he has pledged loyalty to Vixette, he doesn't
totally trust her or the others in her band. He's been told that the Seekers
have been sent to take Uth Teleros for the norms, something he doesn't want to
see. If and when he discovers their true goals, he might leave Vixette,
depending on the threat to himself and Tanix, as well as the strength of his
untested morals.
Personality:While he does stick to a code of honor, Hunter tends to evaluate everything in terms of how it will affect himself and Tanix, who he is very protective of. Oaths are only binding if made to family. If the matter at hand doesn't concern family, it isn't important. He's a cynical, quiet loner who's just looking for a peaceful place to settle down with his brother, and while he does dream of romance, he thinks he's to ugly and inhuman to attract any girl for very long, unless she's pretty odd herself.
Weaknesses: Hunter is extremely protective of his little brother. Should anything happen to Tanix, it's a toss up of whether he'll go homicidal or suicidal. Also, his webbed feet make long hikes difficult without frequent rests.
Skills: His form makes him a very powerful swimmer. He's naturally at home in the water, and he enjoys it, so long as he doesn't have to catch any fish. His tail can also be used to club/trip someone coming up behind him. Hunter is also proficient in tracking and path finding.
Special Abilities:He has a magical form of echolocation that works perfectly well out of water (and underwater, of course). He also has amazing (unnatural) luck; if he's tracking an enemy, they're likely to stumble or leave obvious signs, and prey tends to wander into his snares or be sleeping when he comes.
Weapons:Hunter prefers to use a spear (throwing or melee), although he's fine brawling or using one of the two daggers he carries.
Quotes: "Afraid of fire? Nah, you want afraid of fire, I'll
give you five minutes and... oh what the hell, I'll be nice, only second
degree burns."
"LEAVE MY BROTHER
ALONE!!!"
"How you holding up, little
brother?"
"Tanix, just for once, could
you please tell the voices in your head to shut up?"
